Magnum Opus is the successor to the programs The Daily Crossword (a PC-DOS program current from 1992 to 1994) and Crossword Express (a program with versions for Windows and Apple Macintosh, current from 1994 to 2009).

Most people are probably aware of the negative security issues involving Java Applets. In the future, the online interactive features of Magnum Opus will be implemented by Web Applications created using HTML5 which is free of all such security problems. The first of these will soon be released, and a prototype which presents a selection of six puzzles is included here for your entertainment.

The program is written in the popular Java language which results in two significant advantages:-

  • The executable program is distributed as MagnumOpus.jar Such files (having a .jar extension) are distinguished by the fact that they will run on any computer which has a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) installed. Consequently it will run equally well on Windows and Macintosh (and of course on Linux and Solaris).

    Windows users will probably need to install the Jave Runtime Environment (JRE) on their computer before Magnum Opus can be used successfully. This software package is available from the  Java website.  It's free, and only takes a couple of minutes to download and install.

  • Java uses Unicode to represent characters, so the program automatically caters for the character set of virtually every language used in the world today. No need to specify the character set you want to use...Magnum Opus will take care of all such issues without user intervention.
